Being “The Face” of the NBA is no easy task for any young player. For almost 21 years, LeBron James has been the face of the NBA. He will most certainly hold that title until he retires within the next 5 years. The torch was passed to LeBron seamlessly, but in this new era that task won’t be as easy.
There are legit contenders for the title. Newly acquired Lakers’ point guard Luka Doncic is the first name that comes to mind. Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo are to other super stars that have the opportunity as well. All three players have either won an NBA Finals championship or played for one.
One comment continues to come up about these three potential faces of the league contenders. They are not from the United States. It is strange to think that being a foreign player plays any role into today’s decisions in the NBA. The game of Basketball is a global sport. Of the top 10 players currently in the NBA, at least 5 are from another country.
ESPN’s Stephan A. Smith shared his belief of First Take. “I don’t believe an international player can be the face of the NBA.” Smith continued, “The NBA is an American-born sport. It needs to resonate in America and if it doesn’t resonate in America then it’s not going to matter to America how you resonate beyond.”
Granted, if this is the case than which American-born NBA player will be the face of the league? That title belongs to Anthony Edwards.
Anthony Edwards
Anthony Edwards has all the qualities to be the next face of the NBA after LeBron James retires. Here’s why:
1. Elite Talent & Explosive Athleticism
Edwards is one of the most dynamic young players in the league. He possesses an elite combination of speed, strength, and leaping ability. He can score at all three levels. He attacks the rim with authority. He defends at a high level. These abilities make him a well-rounded player.
2. Charismatic Personality & Marketability
He has a magnetic personality that resonates with fans. His confidence draws people in. His humor makes conversations enjoyable. His natural charisma makes him a great ambassador for the league, akin to how LeBron and Michael Jordan captivated audiences.
3. Big Game Performer & Clutch Factor
Edwards has already shown the ability to take over games in big moments. His playoff performances are outstanding. He is willing to embrace the spotlight. These prove he thrives under pressure, which is essential for being the face of the NBA.
4. Two-Way Star Potential
Unlike some past NBA faces who were mainly offensive superstars, Edwards is developing into an elite two-way player. His defensive intensity, combined with his scoring ability, makes him a complete player that embodies modern basketball.
5. Youth & Longevity
At just 22 years old (as of 2024), Edwards has the potential for a long and dominant career. He improves each season. This suggests he could be at the top of the league for the next decade. Or even more.
6. Relatable & Authentic Personality
Fans love players who are real and relatable. Edwards’ unfiltered and confident demeanor makes him relatable. His underdog mentality coming from Georgia also makes him someone young fans and aspiring athletes can connect with.
7. Leadership Qualities
As he continues to grow, Edwards is proving he can lead a team both on and off the court. His leadership will be crucial in shaping the Timberwolves and potentially a future championship-contending team.
8. Social Media & Cultural Influence
In today’s NBA, being the face of the league is about more than just basketball. Edwards’ personality creates viral moments. He has the potential to be a crossover superstar, much like LeBron and Steph Curry.
9. Post-LeBron NBA Needs a High-Flying Star
LeBron brought highlight-reel dunks, incredible athleticism, and an engaging personality to the league. Edwards can take that torch with his explosive plays and on-camera presence, keeping fans excited for years to come.
10. Potential to Lead a Small Market Team to Greatness
If Edwards can bring success to Minnesota, he could change the narrative of small-market teams struggling to retain superstars. His ability to build a winning culture in Minnesota would only further his legacy.
If Edwards continues to develop and lead the Timberwolves to deep playoff runs, he could possibly achieve a title. In this scenario, he has a strong case to be the next face of the NBA.
