The Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers made an unprecedented trade. They exchanged Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis just days before the trade deadline. This trade is surprising because it happened right around midnight. It occurred right after the Grammys. No one knew it was happening.
Luka is arguably the best 25 and under player in the NBA as of today. We can all agree that Luka is in his prime. In 2024, he led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals. The Mavericks are in position to make a run at the championship this year.
Now, here is why the Luka Doncic trade to the Lakers is so significant to the future of the NBA. For a very long time, the NBA had been known as a player’s league. Unlike the NFL, the NBA players are not hidden behind a helmet and a suit of Armor. Generally, the NBA has succeeded with this model. The players take the lead in growing the game.
The owners and the commissioner Adam Silver have had their hands in the pot. They are pushing the game into new areas of the world. The game of Basketball is an international sport, and the NBA has been the reason for that growth.
Still, for the last 5 years the perception of the NBA in the States has started to dwindle. As revenue from major media rights deal have gone up, the viewership of the game has gone down.
Fans have complained for years now that the style of play on the court isn’t entertaining. Not to mention, there’s been too many occasions where the star players are not playing. It could be due to injury, but the frequency in which star players are screaming they’re injured is unbelievable.
The Owners and players agreed on the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement. This agreement allows for Max contracts. It also includes Super Max contracts for players who have hit a certain criteria.
While the owners have held up their end of the deal, the players have not. The league has implemented a Players Participation Policy. This policy is required for players to qualify for individual awards. Additionally, the league is also fining teams who intentionally rest players without any injury issues.
The Luka trade looks like a one off. However, we saw a trade that sent De’Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings to the San Antonio Spurs. This trade also canceled any possibility of Fox getting the Super Max contract of $345 million.
A loophole in a collective bargaining agreement that both sides don’t particularly like. We are moving towards a new era of NBA basketball. We will expect more teams to dodge super max contract deals.
This loophole ultimately gives the power back to the owners in a big way. NBA legend and NBA Champion Celtic Kevin Garnett issued a warning. He cautioned the players of the NBA about their professionalism. “This is how non-guaranteed contracts are going to come into our league.
