Week 1 of the NFL preseason is often where hidden gems make their first impression. This year’s rookies for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t disappoint.
Here’s a look at the top rookie standouts from each of Florida’s NFL franchises in their first taste of pro football action.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Rookie Standouts
Jacob Parrish, Cornerback – Kansas State
Jacob Parrish, the 3rd-round rookie from Kansas State, made a great impression in NFL Preseason week 1 against the Tennessee Titans. We got a glimpse of Parrish starting in the slot position at corner. He was targeted on the Titans first drive and managed to force the stop on third down.
Early on you can tell the Titans game plan was to target the rookie corner with their rookie quarterback. Veteran receiver Calvin Ridley was the only hand full that got the best of Parrish. With a little more action, Parrish could have a great rookie year.
Emeka Egbuka, Wide Receiver – Ohio State
Emeka Egbuka, the 1st- round rookie from Ohio State, gave the Bucs fans a reason the be excited about the season. At 6’1 205 pounds, Egbuka came out of Ohio State known as a sure handed receiver. He had 1 catch for 21 yards on two targets.
The Bucs coaching staff is looking for Egbuka to be the go-to receiver outside of Mike Evans. He will serve Baker Mayfield in this role until Chris Godwin returns. Godwin dislocated his ankle in last season’s week 7 game against the Ravens. His recovery has been slow and could hinder his return by week 1.
Jacksonville Jaguars Rookie Standouts
Travis Hunter, Wide Receiver & Cornerback – Colorado
Travis Hunter, the 1st-round rookie out of Colorado had a short day. He played 18 snaps total with 10 on offense and 8 on defense. He had 2 catches for 9 yards on two targets. Defensively, he had 5 coverage snaps and only 1 miss tackle vs the run.
Travis’ route running was a question mark coming into the game, but he looked good in and out of breaks. As the season goes on, the Jaguars will have to decide if Hunter will continue to play both offense and defense.
Miami Dolphins Rookie Standouts
Ollie Gordon II, Running Back – Oklahoma State
Ollie Gordon II, the 6th-round rookie out of Oklahoma State had a good showing in his preseason debut. On 8 carriers, Gordon rushed for 33 yards and touchdown. He also showed is versatility in the passing game with 1 catch for 39 yards.
In 2023, Gordon was one of the best running backs in college football. He was a potential 1st-round pick if he had came out in 2024. Gordon could be come the perfect back to pair with De’von Achane.
