At what point does playing the games on the field doesn’t matter? Well in a stunning turn of events, Florida State football was held outside the top 4 rankings for the college football playoff. The Noles are an undefeated Power 5 conference champion that was jumped by two 1-loss teams.
What makes it a surprise is that Florida State played two tough out of conference opponents away from home. Not to mention, the ACC conference had a winning record over the conference the committee seemingly could not do without, the SEC.
So, what does this say about the college football playoffs? Well, it screams to the world that the SEC had an automatic bid into the college football playoff regardless of record.
The criteria we all believed to be true when guaranteeing your program into a college football playoff was to be undefeated in a power 5 conference. Additionally, the committee would consider strength of schedule as well as head to head victories. But, the one criteria that seemed to be written over night included the consideration of key injuries to players or absent of coaches when determining playoff teams.
That last criteria did not count until recently. So much so, the Ohio State Buckeyes won the first College Football Playoffs with a third string quarterback. The same situation happened at Florida State.
Reaction to the CFB Playoff Results
As for now, the college football playoff will go on without Florida State. The Noles are left wondering as they prepare for Georgia.
